The Pula Arena is the name of the amphitheatre in Pula as the city became a regional centre of Roman rule. It is is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved.
Arena was constructed in 27 BC – 68 AD and is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the World. A rare example among the 200 Roman surviving amphitheatres, it is also the best preserved ancient monument in Croatia.
The amphitheatre remained in use until the 5th century, when emperor Honorius prohibited gladiatorial combats. But it was not until 681 that combat between convicts, and wild animals was forbidden.
